Currently on the fifth generation, which debuted in 2021, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an excellent midsize luxury SUV. It has off-road prowess that few competitors can match, coupled with impeccable on-road manners and comfort. There are plenty of used examples, particularly from the fourth generation, which debuted in 2011 and ran until 2022.
The fourth-generation Grand Cherokee features seating for up to five occupants in a 106-cubic-foot passenger cabin, plus 36 cubic feet of luggage space. It offers plenty of creature comforts and technological features, including powered and heated front seats, plus dual-zone climate control, depending on the trim. Later models of the WK2 feature Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, as well as more charging ports and a touch-screen infotainment system.
You can choose between a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that churns out 290 horsepower or the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 360 horsepower. You can also find a 6.4-liter V8 variant called the SRT with 475 horsepower or the 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged SRT Trackhawk. Transmission choices range from a 5-speed automatic to an 8-speed automatic, depending on the powertrain and model year. You’ll also receive ample active and passive safety features that include airbags, stability control, rollover protection, and child safety locks.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s first generation, known as the ZJ, debuted in 1992 as the successor of the Jeep Cherokee. Designed by Larry Shinoda, it was positioned in the luxury SUV segment. It brought premium features such as a driver airbag, digital climate control, and an electronic vehicle information center (EVIC) to the segment. A premium sound system by Jensen or Infinity was offered, as was an in-dash CD player. Powered by a range of engines that included a VM Motori turbodiesel, AMC in-line six, and the renowned Magnum V8, it came with a choice of several full-time or part-time four-wheel-drive systems to pick from, as well as automatic or manual transmissions.
The second generation, called the WJ, was introduced in 1999 and featured a complete interior and exterior redesign, showcasing more modern design language and introducing even more premium features. Interior space was increased, and the premium audio system from Infinity now featured a 10-disc CD changer. Jeep worked with Porsche on improving noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. The range of engines encompassed the Powertech family of in-line six and V8 gasoline power plants, with automatic or manual transmissions and new four-wheel-drive systems to choose from.
The third generation, known as the WK, debuted in 2004 and ran until 2010. It introduced more premium features on the inside and enhanced off-roading capabilities. You could now have the HEMI V8 as an option for more power, and transmission choices were limited to automatics only.
The fourth generation, known as the WK2, entered the market in 2010 and represented a significant change under the skin, as it now featured four-wheel independent suspension for enhanced on-road comfort without compromising on off-road prowess. You could pick from three four-wheel-drive systems, and optional air suspension with height adjustment was offered. Chrysler’s Pentastar V6 was available, as were the HEMI V8s, and even a supercharged variant with 707 horsepower. On the inside, you could specify a 19-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, premium leather and wood finishes, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and front seats with heating and ventilation, among other features.
The current generation is the fifth, also known as the WL, which debuted in 2021 and included the longer, three-row Grand Cherokee L. It features a host of innovations, including Chrysler’s latest uConnect 5 infotainment system, Level 2 autonomous driving technology, a premium McIntosh sound system, and a passenger touch-screen display. There’s also a plug-in hybrid variant on offer, apart from the Pentastar and HEMI V8 powertrains.
